CPL Wayne 'Sam' Lawrence Brown MM

Advised by National President RAAMC Association

Saddened to be advised of the death of a RAAMC Association member, Wayne 'Sam' Brown MM on 10 November 2023 at Caboolture Hospital..
Information was provided by his wife.
Corporal Wayne ’Sam’ Lawrence Brown who, as a National Serviceman was enlisted on 20 April 1967 and was allotted to the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps. He was posted to the 4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment on 02 February1968, as a Medical Assistant and arrived with the Battalion in South Vietnam on 01 June 1968. On 16 February 1969 during Operation Goodwood, B Company was heavily engaged by small arms, machine gun and rocket fire from an enemy concealed in bunkers. At this time, the left forward tank of the troop was heavily damaged and all crew members were wounded. Corporal Brown assisted in the evacuation and treatment of these casualties and escorted them back to a helicopter site in the rear of the company position. At this location, he continued to tend to the wounded until they were ready for evacuation. He then returned to the company headquarters, which was still under small arms fire, to see if he could be of further assistance. During the whole period of his tour in Vietnam, Corporal Brown displayed professional skill and compassion in his treatment of wounded soldiers. His unfailing devotion to duty and personal courage have brought great credit to himself and The Royal Australian Army Medical Corps. For this action Sam was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry under fire.
Another of our finest gone. RIP, you duty is done.

VALE:

Dear Medical Corps Association,

It is with sadness that I inform you of the passing of my father, 42528 R.C.S. (Steve) Dubsky RAAMC.

Dad had been ill for several years battling Multiple System Atrophy that cruelly left him bed bound and completely reliant on the support of Robyn and carers.  He passed away at 1330h on Thursday 10th August 2017. This was no warrior’s death but he died peacefully at home.

Dad served for 33 years with many great postings but his time as RSM of the School of Army Health (and of course RSM of the Corps) from 1983-84 was his favourite.  During this posting he was instrumental in having the Corps Centre Piece constructed.  Dad personally provided the $10,000 for the purchase of silver while waiting for Corps funds to be finalised.  He assisted the sculptor and was present at the pouring of the silver.

Dad saw active service in Borneo while posted to 4th Battalion in 1966 and Vietnam as part of 1 Reinforcement Unit in 1969.  He was awarded his most prized possession, the Infantry Combat Badge, for combat action with 4th Battalion during the period April to August 1966 and while attached to 9th Battalion during the period September - October 1969.

We are yet to arrange funeral details but it is likely to be 17 or 18 August.  While Dad was obviously not in the Battle of Long Tan I would love to present him to God on 18 August.  I will keep you informed.

Dad’s Certificate of Service reads

ARA Service: 21 July 1960 – 17 May 1993

Decorations, Medals and Commendations

General Service Medal 1962 with clasp Borneo

Vietnam Medal

Defence Force Service Medal with two clasps

National Medal

Vietnamese Campaign Medal

Infantry Combat Badge

Returned from Active Service Medal

Yours truly,

COL (Dr.) Maurice Joseph SAINSBURY AM RFD

COL (Dr.) Maurice Joseph SAINSBURY AM RFD passed away peacefully on the morning of the 18th September 2014. He succumbed to a stroke, which he had suffered about 2 weeks prior.

I was pleased I was able to represent our Association together with fellow members and dear friends of Maurie-Frank Lang OAM and Theo Dechaufepie.

His funeral service was held at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium on Tuesday 23rd September. The East chapel was filled with family and friends.

Maurie is survived by his son, Stephen and his two daughters, Christine and Heather and their families.

The service was lovingly conducted by Maurie’s brother, Reverend Max Sainsbury.

Heather read this thoughtful poem that was one of her dad’s favourite:

“Sunset and evening star, and one clear call for me!

And may there be no moaning of the bar, when I put out to sea.

But such a tide as moving seems asleep, too full for sound and foam,

When that which drew from the boundless deep, turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell, and after that the dark!

And may there be no sadness of farewell, when I embark.

For tho’ from out our bourne of time and place, the flood may bear me far.

I hope to see my Pilot face to face. When I have crost the bar”.

Heather spoke for the family, and we listened to her describe a very loving and compassionate father and family figure who was their dad. ‘He was always there for us and would do anything for us. He provided the consistent security and encouragement that we needed to start successful lives of our own’.

She told us of the many happy times of the family singing around the piano and his love of the operatic stars like Domingo and Pavarotti.

We listened to her tell of the many happy parties, and an array of varying guests, who always enjoyed the company of their dad and mum

Heather told us of a man who was a true Public Servant, who worked tirelessly for his community and his country.

She concluded with a quote from her dad’s book about his life, with a tribute to their mum, Erna.

…”Without such a wonderful partner I could not have accomplished whatever I have…Erna was the linchpin of the Sainsbury family—the steady, consistent influence”.

Heather said..”We were so lucky to have two such wonderful parents”.

Stephen also spoke for the family. He described his dad as ‘driven, competitive and achievement orientated’ with the firm belief that anyone could do whatever they wanted in life by using their brain and working hard.

He also told us of a man who was loving, compassionate, generous, caring and most empathetic, and that Family was very important to him.

Stephen said his dad liked sport and he excelled in cricket, tennis, gymnastics, boxing, surf boat crewing, squash, golf and fishing—this from his early childhood days right through to university and beyond.

Stephen evoked many of his happy childhood memories, especially at Christmas time, whether in England or back home in Sydney. His dad taught him how to use a rifle when they went rabbit hunting on their grandparent’s farm near Blayney. He taught Stephen how to drive a car (up at the farm).

Stephen recalled some happy memories of family camping.

Stephen gave us a small glimpse of their dad’s working life, starting in Cowra Hospital as a young doctor (this was where he first met his future wife, Erna, who was a Nursing Sister.)

Then to Windang on the south coast of NSW (where he and Christine were born).

The family moved to England (Heather was born there) where their dad studied Psychiatry for 5 years.

When the family moved back to Australia, their dad secured a position at the North Ryde Psychiatric Centre. He went on to become the Deputy Head. They lived in a doctor’s residence in North Ryde.

His dad held the following appointments; Honorary Psychiatrist-Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai Hospital and at Sydney Hospital, the first Director of the Institute of Psychiatry, Seconded to Head Office NSW Dept of Health, Senior Specialist Mental Health Services NSW Dept of Health, Consultant Psychiatrist to the Royal Commission into the former Chelmsford Private Hospital, Part-Time Member Guardianship Tribunal of NSW, Part-Time Member Mental Health Review Tribunal NSW, Official Visitor NSW Dept of Health.

Their dad retired in 2009. Stephen has a fond memory of just a few years back of both of them in a kayak, Dad in front and Stephen behind, paddling up the Minnamurra River.

He concluded by saying “Dad was always there for us—in the good times and when we need his help”.

Stephen told us of his dad’s involvement with the CMF and the Army.

Maurie’s Service Number was 2146892. He joined the CMF 13 March 1969, as a Captain with 1 Field Ambulance until the 12th June 1969.

He went to Full Time Duty on the 13th June 1969, and was posted overseas to I Australian Field Hospital in Vietnam with the rank of Major, until the 23rd October 1969.

He came back to Australia and went back to the CMF on the 24th October 1969 and re-joined 1 Field Ambulance until 12th January 1971 when he was transferred to 7 Field Regiment until the 29th May 1973 and was transferred to 1 General Hospital until the 3rd July 1977.

From 4th July 1977 until his retirement, as Colonel,  on the 24th July 1986 he was stationed at HQ 2 Military District. Maurie’s employment was Consultant Psychiatrist.

COLONEL Maurice Sainsbury AM RFD was awarded the following: The Australian Active Service Medal 1945-75 with Clasp-Vietnam, Vietnam Medal, Reserve Force Decoration, Australian Defence Medal.
